Mount Voices is the literary magazine of Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles. We publish the best works of our students as well as that of writers from across the country and, when we're lucky, from other nations. We publish both Spanish and English works. We also show artwork, both on our website and in our magazine.
We publish twice a year, in January and September. We read submissions from September to June, though you can submit anytime.
As for our vision, or our aesthetic-we are what was once referred to as a girl's school; sometimes that phrase still slips out from time to time. We're more than happy to deconstruct it.
Ours is a women's university, run predominantly by women, with most of the students women from all walks of life. Men do attend the college, predominantly in the graduate programs and the Nursing Department. However, at our core, we are what Alice Walker once termed womenist.
We like poetry with an edge (and we love both formal and free verse), fiction that actually has a story to it (holds the reader's attention to the end), and essays that reveal in words the worlds of others that may seem strange to us. A massacred village in Central America. A man who has worked sixty years in maintenance at an institution of higher education. Anything with some bite, we'd like to see it.
The easiest way to submit your work is through the website or via email, mountvoices@msmc.la.edu. In the subject box please write the genre you are sending (poetry, fiction, nonfiction essay, etc.).
In the email, write a short query about yourself and your work. Send you work as an attachment.

Send 3 to 5 poems at a time. Short stories can range from 10 to 25 pages, though we consider longer (and shorter) pieces as well. The same with nonfiction. If you have a query idea for a story that you'd like to write, send that, along with examples of your writing.
Art: Please send photos (jpg files) of your work to the same web address. 1 or 2 photos will suffice. If we like what we see, we will ask for more.
NOTE: We like to publish an author's photo along with the pieces that we publish. If accepted, we will ask you for a photo.
All work accepted will be published on our Zine. From the website, we then decide on what will go in our magazine that year.
We like to hear from our readers, and also enjoy publishing some of the letters when space permits.

Mount Voices publishes twice a year, in January and in September. Each issue costs $10; a full year (the two issues) costs $18.
